The past is reborn in the future with the MA-01 Maserati Biturbo Shamal, a true icon of design and performance from the Trident brand, returning to the road thanks to Modena Automobili’s Restomod MA-01 project. This reinterpretation pays homage to its legacy, combining the charm of the past with the latest technological innovations and contemporary design.
Launched in 1982, the Maserati Biturbo revolutionised the automotive landscape with its bold design and impressive performance, establishing itself as a symbol of innovation and prestige. In 1989, the Maserati Shamal further elevated the range’s status, introducing a 3,217 cc twin-turbo V8 engine, a design signed by Marcello Gandini, and a production limited to just 369 units, making it a coveted piece for brand enthusiasts.
Modena Automobili transforms the Maserati Biturbo Shamal into a true modern masterpiece, maintaining its essence while enhancing it with cutting-edge technology. At the heart of this project is a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine, originally developed by Maserati under Ferrari’s supervision, capable of delivering 500 hp and a maximum torque of 550 Nm. With this power, the model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 290 km/h. The ZF 8-speed automatic transmission ensures smooth and precise gear shifts.
The new suspension improves dynamic handling and stability, while the Brembo braking system and Pirelli PZero tyres guarantee a sporty driving experience. The exterior, now made from a combination of steel and carbon fibre, modernises the original lines with contemporary details such as LED lighting and reinforced aerodynamic elements.
More than just impressive performance, the Restomod MA-01 Biturbo Shamal stands out for its revolutionary design. Modena Automobili’s design centre has completely reimagined the bodywork, using materials such as steel and, above all, carbon fibre, significantly reducing the vehicle’s weight. At the front, the redesigned and lowered grille, LED headlights integrated into a carbon structure, and widened air intakes optimise engine and brake cooling. The aggressive aerodynamic splitter enhances the car’s stability and sporty character. The new bonnet, equipped with ventilation grilles and a 2.5 cm central bulge, accommodates the powerful upgraded engine.
At the rear, a “truncated tail” highlights the model’s dynamism, incorporating an arched, square-shaped spoiler. The black strip with the “Shamal” inscription connects the redesigned taillights, while the rear diffuser, featuring four exhaust outlets and vertical ventilation ducts, balances the design’s fluidity.
The model’s sporty character is further emphasised by the aerodynamic side skirts, ensuring continuity between the front splitter and the rear diffuser. A roof spoiler with an integrated third brake light adds an extra touch of aggressiveness.
The MA-01’s interior combines luxury and modernity, reinterpreting the iconic elements of the original model. The ergonomic and highly customisable Recaro Classic LX seats are paired with restored Biturbo rear seats.
The digital instrument panel, inspired by the classic Shamal design, integrates a state-of-the-art infotainment system, automatic climate control, and the iconic Maserati oval clock, now removable and functional. Details such as the pedals, gear lever, and dashboard evoke the original model, while a premium sound system – with options from brands such as Bose, JBL, and Alpine – ensures an exceptional acoustic experience.
Only 33 units of the MA-01 Maserati Biturbo Shamal will be produced, each numbered and handcrafted at Modena Automobili’s workshops in Modena, with homologation from the prestigious German TÜV certification body. Each model can be fully customised at no additional cost, from exterior colours to interior finishes.
To mark this launch, a 1:4 scale model of the Maserati Shamal Restomod will be presented at major international fairs, accompanied by the prototype currently in development. With this Restomod, Modena Automobili not only pays tribute to one of Maserati’s most emblematic models but also redefines the future of automotive performance and design.
