GUERLAIN’S DISCOVERY: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BIO-PHOTON EMISSION BY SKIN CELLS AND THEIR SENESCENCE
It has been observed that cells emit bio-photons or Ultra-Weak Photon Emission (UPE) at a level invisible to the naked eye. Fibroblasts, the skin cells responsible for collagen production, lose their capabilities with senescence, the natural aging process of cells. The quality of the skin matrix degrades, leading to visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, loss of firmness, and luminosity.
For the first time, Guerlain studied and measured in vitro the bio-photon emission between young and senescent skin cells (fibroblasts), in collaboration with a team of biophysicists from Palacký University, providing the necessary technologies to measure UPE in a biological context. This study demonstrated significant differences in UPE between young and senescent skin cells, establishing a connection with cellular youth. It was also shown that these differences are amplified when cells are subjected to oxidative stress. A summary of these results was published at the American Society of Cell Biology (ASCB) conference in December 2023.

Compared to a classic white orchid, it emits 68% more intense light, as demonstrated by instrumental testing compared to Phalaenopsis amabilis.
