The electric Range Rover will offer electric propulsion capabilities, refinement, and luxury travel. The first prototypes of the vehicle are currently being tested in some of the world’s most demanding environments. The fully electric motor is undergoing tests in extreme temperatures, from -40°C in the Arctic Circle to 50°C in the scorching deserts of the Middle East.
The on-road launch of the first electric Range Rover vehicles is the result of an annual and ongoing process of virtual development and component refinement to deliver the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever. The electric Range Rover will offer electric propulsion capabilities, refinement, and luxury travel.
Initial tests have focused on battery performance and electric drive units (EDUs), the vehicle’s main components such as transmission, electric motor, and electronics, in extreme temperatures down to -40°C. The installation of batteries and electric drive units (EDUs) was performed internally at JLR for the first time.
Tests on the frozen lakes of Sweden have highlighted the capabilities of the new fully electric Range Rover internal propulsion system. This system will allow the vehicle to enhance its recognized performance on low-grip surfaces and ensure that the Range Rover’s off-road capability remains unmatched in all weather conditions and on all types of terrain.
For the first time in this vehicle, the new traction control system provides exceptional levels of performance on icy or low-grip surfaces. Instead of a traditional traction control setup based solely on the ABS system, the electric Range Rover distributes wheel slip management to each electric traction control unit, reducing torque reaction time at each wheel from 10 milliseconds to just 1 millisecond.
This innovative software, developed in-house at JLR, allows precise control of the electric traction unit speed to manage wheel slip, reducing the need for ABS intervention. Traction is maximized on all types of surfaces with exceptional response and refinement to significantly enhance the Range Rover driving experience. The system works in conjunction with stability control systems and chassis to provide an even more refined driving experience.
“The electric Range Rover embodies the luxury, refinement, and performance characteristic of the Range Rover and incorporates a nearly silent fully electric propulsion system for relaxed and hassle-free travel. We are doing everything in our power, so we are already working on our physical testing and development program, designed to push the electric Range Rover to the limit and ensure it continues to deliver unparalleled performance.” — Thomas Mueller, Executive Director, Product Engineering.
