In a recent celebration dedicated to the rich tapestry of Portuguese gastronomy at the 15th edition of the ‘Prémios Mesa Marcada,’ Chef Gil Fernandes, the mastermind behind the renowned Fortaleza do Guincho restaurant, seized the spotlight. This accolade marks the recognition of his profound talent and years of dedicated craftsmanship, notably for his adept reinterpretation of traditional Portuguese recipes through a modern and distinctly personal lens.
Gil Fernandes, a rising star in the national gastronomic scene, boasts an impressive journey, having honed his skills alongside three-Michelin-starred chefs like Johnny Bower in the Netherlands, the iconic Martin Berasategui in Lasarte, and Rasmus Kofoed in Geranium, among the 50 Best Restaurants in the World. Upon his return to Portugal, he seamlessly integrated into the team led by the two-Michelin-starred chef Hans Neuner at Ocean (Vila Vita Parc). Since 2018, Fernandes has been at the helm of the restaurant in one of Portugal’s most picturesque hotels, Fortaleza do Guincho, situated on the beach of the same name in Cascais. Directed by Petra Sauer since 2004, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant is a culmination of talents, including Petra’s visionary contribution to Portuguese gastronomy by endorsing a young chef with unique perspectives and a kitchen brimming with character. At the ‘Mesa Marcada’ awards ceremony, an emotional Fernandes shared the spotlight with his dedicated team, acknowledging Fortaleza do Guincho as a “preeminent school of Portuguese gastronomy,” a breeding ground for some of the country’s top culinary talents. And Gil Fernandes is one of them!
“This award is the culmination of years of relentless effort, unwavering dedication, faith, focus, and a belief in something that transcends us. Above all, it underscores the result of sheer hard work – not only mine but that of my entire team and those who proudly wear our colors. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to them for their unwavering commitment. Together, we will continue this remarkable journey at the forefront of gastronomic innovation,” Fernandes expressed.
The ‘Mesa Marcada‘ awards, championed by the eponymous blog of Miguel Pires and Duarte Calvão, annually spotlight the luminaries in Portuguese gastronomy across diverse categories since 2008.
Fortaleza do Guincho will be temporarily closed until mid-March for a rejuvenation of its rooms and a comprehensive overhaul of the restaurant, bar, and common areas, promising a revitalized ambiance and a new menu to welcome the spring.
